Egglestone Abbey
Egglestone Abbey
This lonely building on the landscape was an impressive construction. After being used as an abbey, it was converted into a private home and then in the 19 century was abandoned entirely and some of the stone was used to make the stables at the nearby Rokeby Hall.
Today there are only some thick walls remaining, but there are still some features to be seen that highlight how the building was used during different periods, and these present a good puzzle for your imagination to work on.
Unfortunately some of the information panels are in such a poor state of repair that they are impossible to read, but the abbey is worth the visit if only for the atmosphere.
